Things have been busy at work lately, and it hasn't left me with much time to write—time which also must include downtime to take care of my mental health. My amazing writing partner reminded me awhile back that taking care of myself is important for the writing process, so I've been attempting cut myself some slack. Maybe I've been cutting myself too much slack, but that remains to be seen. I'm still on track to get my reader magnet uploaded to BookFunnel as a free download for my newsletter. When Roses Bleed is still on track to be released this spring sometime.
But what about my dark romance that I'm hoping to one day submit to agents?
That's definitely taken a back seat to everything else going on. I've written under 2k words for it so far, but I've been doing exactly the opposite of what I preach: I haven't been feeling very inspired to work on it, so I haven't worked on it at all. I've been working on editing my novella, When Flames Die, and When Roses Bleed, book two in The Kylie Bell Chronicles.
Work. Other writing projects. The holidays.
The holidays.
My boss is giving us the week off for Christmas, which means I have nine whole days of free time to get in as much writing as I can. And that's exactly what I plan to do when not with my family for the holidays.
I'm still hoping to create a downloadable course on how to write characters with mental illness. I haven't exactly known where to start with that idea, so it's been placed on the back burner for now.
Speaking of mental illness, if you have not checked out The Housemaid by Freida McFadden, it is FANTASTIC. I devoured the audiobook in just a couple of days while at work. The first half leads you to believe that certain characters are living with severe mental illness, paranoia, and psychosis, and I almost DNF'd it because of that, but I am SO glad I finished the book. It is full of twisty turns, and the absolute female rage against the patriarchy is FABULOUS.
I love female rage in books. We need more books with it. We need more books to fight the patriarchy.
I'm releasing the paperback of When Snapdragons Whisper in the next month or so, which I'm excited about. I'm currently halfway through proofing my copy. I also have to update my website URL in the Author Bio at the back and on the ePub version. I'd love to come out with a special edition hardcover with sprayed edges, but I was advised to hold off on that until sales pick up.
Smart.
In other unrelated updates, I'm taking my husband to New York for the very first time to visit my friends — also so he can get a first-person view of what NYC is like. I have friends up there, and we're going to an Islanders game while we're visiting.
